ARMY SERVICE APPELLANTS * FIXING THE BASIC RATE (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Sunday An announcement that the three special tribunals appointed to investigate the financial position of men. whose appeals against military service had been allowed by the armed forces appeal boards would begin their sittings shortly, has been made by the Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semple. He said it was intended that such men should be left, in a financial position no better than they would enjoy as soldiers. Men who will come before the special tribunals are conscientious objectors whose appeals have been allowed, and those whose appeals have been dismissed subject to being employed in non-combatant duties in the armed forces, but for whom the military authorities are unable at present to provide such duties; The Minister added that before beginning their sittings the tribunals would determine a basic rate representing the value of a soldier's pay, keep, clothing, medical and dental attention, and allowances for dependants. If appellant's salary was greater than the basic rate agreed upon, plus allowances, lie would be ordered to pay the excess to the Social Security Fund. If the appellant's earnings were less than the basic rate, plus allowances, he would not be paid any subsidy. DENIAL OF CIVIL RIGHTS FARMERS' RESOLUTION (0.C.) WHAXGAREI, Sunday Sterner measures in dealing with conscientious objectors to military service were urged, at a meeting of the Whangarei branch of the Farmers Union. One member with four sons at the front said that conscientious objectors should be denied their civil rights, and a resolution to that effect was carried.
