HOLIDAY WEATHER

LABOUR PAY EECOBDSi VERY FEW FINE SPELLS THE OUTLOOK FOR TO-DAY The hopes of holiday-makers that the improved weather in Auckland yesterday will continue to-day and so belie the depressing reputation of Labour Day for uncongenial weather are encouraged by meteorological forecasts. Apart from the likelihood of odd showers, there are said to be prospects of good outdoor conditions. The squally and wintry conditions throughout Friday and up to a late hour on Saturday morning, when hail showers fell in Auckland and suburbs, gave way to sunshine and dealing skies, which continued throughout yesterday. A few heavy showers fell on Saturday afternoon and evening, but conditions were piore settled yesterday, a sunny, but rather cold, day ending with a light shower in the evening. Records over the past 14 years show there have been only four fine Labour days in that period. In the five years from 1927 onward wintry conditions prevailed. The weather was fine on Labour Day in 1933 and again in the two succeeding years. However, in the following three years the depressing record of wet weather was repeated. Ideal outdoor conditions were enjoyed iri 1939, but another wet day was added to the records last year. In 1933 a move was made to have the observance of Labour Day altered to a date in November on the ground tlia the weather then is more suitable for holiday-making. Representations were made to the Government, but the spell of f m e-weather holidays enjoyed from that vear apparently discouraged the reformers, and the agitation lapsed. MANY ATTRACTIONS SUMMER SPORTS BEGIN HEAVY RAILWAY TRAFFIC Trotting, cricket and athletics are the principal outdoor attractions or the Labour Day holiday to-day. Chiet interest will centre in the second day s programme of the Auckland Trot tin,, Club's spring meeting at Alexandra Park. Epsom. Forced to postpone its first series of games owing to the unfavourable weather on Saturday, the Auckland Cricket Association will make a beginning at ten o'clock this morning with one-day senior matches at Eden Park, Victoria Park and Devonport. Leading track and field athletes anti cvclists will be seen in action at the Domain cricket ground, where the. Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club will hold its usual Labour Day meeting. In addition to golf tournaments at the Titirangi and Maungakiekie links, a number of tennis and bowling clubs will be conducting special competitions. Three professional matches will be staged in the evening at the Town Hall by the Auckland Wrestling Association. Bookings for tonight at all picture theatres and cabarets are particularly heavy. Railway traffic has been very heavy over the week-end. Delayed on the earlier part of the journey, both the regular expresses from "Wellington were late in reaching Auckland on Saturday. An extra holiday express arrived. A heavily booked excursion train for Whangarei left at 2.10 on Saturday afternoon. There will be extra expresses leaving for Wellington at 7.35 to-night and to-morrow night. A special train for the Cambridge races will leave at 6.55 a.m. to-day, returning at 10.9 p.m.
