GOOD RUN BY BASCULE TIDEWAITER TAKES HURDLES EGYPTIAN ROSE SCORES AGAIN (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Saturday Tlie top-weight, Tidcwaiter, won the Riinn Hurdles with ;i solid finishing run. lie was always fairly handy and jumped well. Tide-waiter moved forward on the turn after the pacemaker, Great Quex, behind Student Prince and Master Lackham. Student Prince weakened two furlongs from home, but Tidewaiter was on terms with Great (Juex and Master Lackham at the last fence. Once over Tidevvaiter proved much the better stayer, and Master Lackham just headed Great Quex ou( of second. The rest were well beaten. The Riccarton three-year-olds Good Scout and Renarde staged a thrilling finish in the Trial Stakes, the latter getting in the last stride. From a very poor suap-start, Theatre, who jumped' away with a clear lead, and Drake's Drum made play from Dash o' Dublin, Hikorangi, High Morale, Gay Dancer, Good Scout, on the rails, Lord Defoe and Olein, with Graeco-Roman well back. Entering the straight Good Scout moved up to the leaders and Dash o' Dublin also came on well. Then at the distance Renarde, who had gradually improved- her position, put in a claim oil the inside of Good Scout. Renarde and Good Scout drew away to fight out the finish, and P. Spratt, who had ridden Good Scout hard from the three furlongs, appeared momentarily to ease up. Renarde just getting up on the line. Lord Defoe was a fair third, and Graeco-Ronian just beat. Dash o' Dublin for fourth. Had G raeco-Roman got away well he would have been placed. Olein ami Stairway headed the others. Salutation Superior Saluation, sixth favourite each way, showed definite superiority against those of her own age in the Wellington Guineas. Premature took up the running from Foreign Coin, Salutation, Aqueduct, Burra Sahib and Monetary, the rear being brought up by Par Avion, Corn Prince and Sandy Bay. Premature led into the straight from Burra Sahib. Salutation and Aqueduct. Foreign Coin had' dropped back and Corn Prince was beginning to move forward. Burra Sahib had charge at the distance, but Salutation, finishing on the inner, got on terms in the last 100 yards and outstayed him. Corn Prince was a poor third, just heading his stablemate. Par Avion. Then came Sandy Bay, Aqueduct, Premature and Monetary, with Foreign Coin a bad last. The going appeared to affect many of the runners, but there ifi no denying the merit of the winner's performance. Foreign Coin failed badly under conditions believed to be very much ill his favour. The Greenwood colours were again carried to victory in the Heretaunga Handicap, this time by the maiden performer Bascule. He. was within striking distance throughout and over the last furlong he put in his claim on the outer to win going away from Phyto, who stayed a little better than the pacemaker, Ackemrna. The favourite, Moderate, was handy early, but he drifted in the middle stages, and, although he made a forward move again at the false rail, he flattered. Other well-supported horses. Kevin, Gothic and Red Dash, were well placed all t,he way, but they failed to run the journey out. Two-Year-old Contest Damask, favourite for the Karitane, Handicap, was never a possibility, and eventually she finished a had fourth. The race was won practically throughout by Palora, The only time she was headed was briefly at the end of a furlong by Astros, but the latter soon went back, and Palora led' into the straight, from Foreign Princess and Dominate. Palora was clear entering the last furlong, hut. Dominate, next the rails, was on terms in the last 100 yards. However, Palora stayed Oil a trifle too well. Foreign Princess was a close third, with a big gap to Damask, Fescue and Dalesman. Wardress was responsible for an outstanding effort in the Walkins Handicap. She began well and occupied a handy posit ion till the five-furlong post, when she suddenly went back to the rear. By the time the straight was reached she had moved forward again on the inside, and .iusl as The Monarch had taken over from Bean Ciel. Kotua and Happy Ending, who were racing in close order, Wardress put in her claim. Over the last furlong Wardress and The Monarch fought out a bitter finish, the former doing a lillle the belter. Happy Finding and Kotua had a similar struggle for third, with Dynasty well up and a big gap to .the bunch beaded by Little Robin. Night Pilot drew one of tho outside positions, but he began well and was prominent in the running throughout until lie reached (he false rail, where some of the horses inside him bore out and he was the last lo get the bump, which knocked him off his balance and cost him any chance he may have had. Consistency Rewarded The consistent Augment improved on his third of the first day to win the Awatea Handicap decisively. Black Majesty. Screen Star, Autolite, Saxon Tor and Not Out were most prominent to the straight, with Boswe 11 and Sir Beau in the rear. Saxon Tor assumed the lead at the false rail, then in the last furlong Augment challenged and drew away. Boswell came with a solid run. wide out," to cut down Saxon Tor, and a length further away Star Zone, Not Out and Autolite were practically in line. They were attended by Black Majesty, Roeon and Sir Beau. The favourite. Circular Note, was never prominent. Cheddington, elected favourite for the Belmont Handicap, had every chance, hut he weakened to fifth in the run home. '1 he race was won well by Egyptian Rose, who lay behind the pacemaker. Lqgal. to the straight, then drawing clear. Wild Fox finished well, but she ran in and had to be checked, or she would have made it harder for the winner. High Class always one of the leaders, held on for third, and Legal was fourth. Cheddington. Willow Wood and Alienate followed. Willow Wood did not get a good run in the early stages. The winner scored in the second division of tho Rimutaka Handicap on Thursday.
