ORAKEI SETTLEMENT

GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS (0.C.) WELLINGTON. Thursday The high incidence of disease among Maoris at Orakei was recently quoted in the House of Representatives by Mr. \V. P. Endean (National —Romuera). who asked the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, what steps the Government proposes to take to deal with the question of the settlement. "The Government is at present considering ways and means to deal with the unsatisfactory position which exists ;it the settlement,' 1 states the Minister in reply. "The Native Land Court is being asked to determine various questions touching the ownership of several of the houses. The matter of providing alternative accommodation lor the Maoris and their rehabilitation in proper surroundings is receiving consideration also. On the matter of the incidence o\' disease in the settlement, it may be stated that constant supervision oi itv sanitary condition is exercised, and the district nurse spends a great deal of time in the settlement on educational, preventive and corrective nursing work."
