DETERIORATED LANDS

Sir, —A report appears in Saturday's issue of the appointment of a select committee to consider tlio best moans of bringing hack into production or of developing and using deteriorated or marginal land. Tremendous responsibility is placed upon the members of this committee, Upon their report may depend the profitable use or otherwise of millions of money. The man in the street would like to he sure that. I hey are qualified to report on a subject which seems to have baffled the Agricultural Depart merit and the unfortunate farmers who came to grief on these lands. There may he among your readers some who could inform us what, are the special qualifications of the members of the committee for such a task. The mere fact that they may happen to he members of Parliament for constituencies in which the problem is acute is no justification for their appointment. If their report is to be blue-pencilled by the Agricultural Department before adoption, why is their report wanted? If not, what is the use of an Agricultural Department? Puriri.
