THE HOUSING PROBLEM

Sir.—The housing question in Auckland is a very serious matter. This lias been caused almost wholly by the Fair Rents Act (with amendments) which has discouraged all private enterprise building houses to let. There are hundreds of dwellings in Auckland very suitable to be converted into two or three flats at a reasonable cost, but owing to the drastic by-laws of the City Council, which in most cases necessitate tearing the building to pieces, many owners are not in a position to incur the heavy expense entailed. Conseqiient.lv, to get suitable accommodation, and not live in apartment houses, is no easy matter, ami will get worse and worse under present conditions. JcNics Jr.
