THEFTS ADMITTED

CLERK ON PROBATION The theft of £lO from Charles Hasley Wyatt on August 14 and the attempted theft of £5 2s 6d from Rosaline Kingham on October 14 were admitted by Richard White, clerk, aged 23. when he appeared before Mr. J. Morling, S.M.. yesterday. Detective-Sergeant Nalder said that, with a companion, accused had gained the confidence of Wyatt, a soldier about to go overseas, and undertook to change some of his New Zealand money into Australian currency. On receiving two £o notes from Wyatt they had disappeared. When found, accused admitted the offence but refused to disclose tho name of his companion who, he said, was a married man with two children. Posing as tho secretary of an association of unions which did not exist, accused had also attempted to obtain £5 2s 6d from Mrs. Kingham, alleging that her son had authorised him to collect the money. "Ho has quite a long list for a young man of 23," said Mr. Nalder. Accused had arrived in New Zealand from Sydney as a stowaway in 1939, and had a criminal record in Australia and New Zealand. In August, 1940, when he appeared on three charges of theft, accused was sentenced to IS months' reformative detention and three years' probation.
