WATER FOR AUCKLAND

FUTURE SUPPLY QUESTION Satisfaction with the reports on the future water supply for Auckland, presented at the previous meeting by Mr. j E. 11. l'otter and the president, Mr. 1. J. Goldstine, was expressed in letters received at last night's meeting of the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association from a number of the local authorities afliliated to the association. As a number ot local bodies had not replied in time for the meeting, it was decided to leave discussion until a special meeting to be called early in December, giving all bodies an opportunity to state their views. A report which had been presented to the Manukau County Council by a committee appointed to consider proposals for the development of a South Auckland water supply service was read. In this, it was stated that almost without exception South Auckland local authorities were dependent on underground sources of supply, and they were meeting with increasing difficulty in catering for the demand, especially in dry seasons. The claim was made that extension of the water supply services created a demand for pipes and fittings, most of which could bo made in New Zealand, this creating industry in addition to keeping a great deal of the money in the country. The committee reported that it based all its assumptions on evidence placed before a eonimission_ appointed by the Government in 11)27 to investigate ihe same matter.
