NATIONAL SAVINGS

INTENSIFIED CAMPAIGN Although over £3,000,000 was deposited in national savings accounts in the past year, the national savings movement, with headquarters m Wellington, plans to raise £5,000,000 in the forthcoming year, la order to give impetus to the movement, 40 local committees have been formed throughout New Zealand and new methods of publicity are being devised to improve results. One method of stimulating interest is shortly to be put into operation in Auckland. A barometer indicating progress in the campaign will be placed in front of the Chief Post Office. The weekly total to he aimed at in Auckland for the coming year is £15,000, which is three, times the amount of present weekly receipts, and as money is deposited in savings accounts during the week the barometer will move toward the £15,000 level. National savings accounts in New Zealand now total almost 2:35,000. Included in this are 90,000 accounts in 0000 groups. This group saving plan was adopted from England, whore there arc now 10,000,000 savers in 165,000 groups. Auckland, with 9600 accounts in 4GI groups, and 14,700 direct accounts, takes second place to Wellington.
