EIRE BRIGADE PLANT

BETTER TELESCOPIC LADDER A demonstration of the improvements made to the turntable telescopic ladder which has been brought into commission again at the central fire station was given to members of 1 lie Auckland Metropolitan fire Hoard yesterday. The ladder was undergoing overhaul when the fire occurred at John Burns and Company's premises in Customs Street in August. A modern and powerful engine has been installed in the motor vehicle on which '.' ie ladder is mounted and replaces the one which has been in use for about 20 years. This will enable speedier transport for the unit and more facile handling of the ladder in action. The members of the board witnessed the process of putting the unit in action. At the board meeting tho placing of an order for a new telescopic ladder was authorised. The superintendent reported he had been advised bv the manufacturer's agents that there was no possibility of procuring a ladder from Britain at present. It was decided to place the order so that it could be given preference when the equipment was available.
