TRAFFIC CONTROL

CHIEF INSPECTOR CHOSEN CENTRALISATION SCHEME [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON, Tuesday The appointment of Mr. P. C. Watson to the position of chief traffic inspector, head office, Transport Department, has been announced. He will be responsible for the supervision of the department's traffic inspection staff throughout the Dominion and will keep in close contact with those local authorities on whose behalf the department controls traffic. The centralisation of control of traffic, with the advantage of securing uniformity, is reported to be steadily progressing by negotiation or mutual arrangement. For some time the department has been providing an efficient traffic control service for small boroughs unable to employ full-time inspectors, but it is gradually taking over the larger and more important areas. The system of group inspection areas formerly operated by contiguous counties has been replaced almost entirely by the department's administration. It is reported from Palmerston North that arrangements are being made for its traffic control to be taken over by the department. This will be an important 6tep, as it will be the first major centre to place its traffic under the control of the department.
