STOCKS AND SHARES

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE

AUSTRALIAN ISSUES EASE Australian shares suffered a setback on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, the downward turn being in sympathy with weakness in the Sydney market. All the principal leaders were affected, and Broken Hill Proprietary gave way Is 3d in two transactions, closing at 40s 6d, while a reduction of 30s in quotations for Colonial Sugars left buyers unmoved. By contrast, the market for New Zealand scrip remained very firm, and where price changes occurred they were in sellers' favour. Bank of New Zealands made a slow response to the dividend announcement, but a keen demand developed yesterday, and three parcels were taken 3d higher at 40s, at v/lnch price further supplies were sought.

Gas (perp.) . 92 10 0 94 0 0 NEW SHALE OIL PROCESS AUSTRALIAN INVESTIGATION The acute petrol shonage in Australia has produced a crop of ceekers after some suitable substitute. In the opinion of most motorists and transport hauliers, the only real substitute for petrol is petrol. The average user want 3 something that can be poured into his tank which will respond to the touch of a starter. For that reason there has been much interest in the claims of Mr.. Clifford Harney, who, through the patronage of the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Alderman J. B. Chandler, has developed a new catalytic method for the extraction of oil from shale. Provided Australia hac tho rich shales she is Teputerl to have, and that Harney's process justifies laboratory teste, there appears to be a big future for shale fuel. Hamey s plant includes not only a revolutionary retorting system, but a new cracking method and a new refining technique. Without using the orthodox washes of caustic soda ana doctor dopes, he produces a water clear spirit of high grade. Some shales have yielded, by this method, up to 200 gallons of crude oil a ton, but even the low grade shales giving onlv about 40 gallons to the ton are commercially good because Hamey has retorted these at' the rate of 20 minutes to an hour a. ton. Other methods require from five hours to 21 hours a ton.
