NEW PROFESSOR

AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY ~ MODERN LANGUAGES POST.: The appointment of Dr. Allwyn» Charles Keys, lecturer in modern languages at Victoria University Col-/ lege, as professor of modern languages at Auckland University College has ■ been made by the college council. The vacancy occurred through the death last* year of Professor Maxwell Walker. Since then Miss D. L. Miller has been acting-professor. Dr. Keys, who is ii, will take up his appointment in March. With a distinguished academic record, Dr. Keys has been lecturer in modern" languages at Victoria University since 1934. A pupil of Wellington College, he enterecf Victoria University in 1925 as a junior university scholar. He* graduated B.A. in 1927, and in the same year was senior scholar in Greek. He also was awarded the Bobert Stout scholarship for the most distinguished graduate of the year. In the following year he graduated M.A., with first-;' class honours in Latin and French. He held the position of assistant-lecturer in the department of classics at Victoria University in 1929. At the end of that; year Dr. Keys was awarded a travelling scholarship in French, and he left for France to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. Dr. Keys obtained a doctorate of the University of Paris in 1932. and also diplomas in classical languages and phonetics. He also holds a certificate; of proficiency in German at the M.A. honours standard.
