PROTECTING GAME

CARE OF SANCTUARIES PROPOSAL TO SOCIETY The Auckland Acclimatisation Society last night discussed a suggestion that it take steps to protect game by placarding its sanctuaries and offering a reward of £2O for .information leading to the conviction of persons taking game out of season. Mr. C. A. Whitney, who moved that action be taken, said the absence of game in certain sanctuaries was due to shooting all the year round. He instanced the dearth of game at Rangiriri and Huntlv lakes.

The president, Mr. F. McKenzie. said he favoured the principle, but suggested it be limited in application to sanctuaries that could be explicitly defined. The proposal was referred to the Game Committee for a report. The following remits were approved for submission to the North Island Council conference to be held at Wellington:—ln the event of the council approving a reduction in the bonus of 5s a licence for the destruction of vermin, it be recommended that the balance of unexpended funds be paid out on certificates of societies to cover the cost of fencing and planting grey duck swamps with feed, or to promote a fund for the importation by the council of chukor and sand grouse; that to enable societies to budget correctly the Minister of Internal Affairs be asked to affirm that the shooting season for next. year be the same as last season.
