CANADIAN GOODS

USE OF IMPORT LICENCES A ruling that, as a general procedure, import licences could not bo issued to allow alternative sources of supply to he utilised automatically, has been given by the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Nash, in a letter to the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, which was received at a meeting of the council yesterday.

This was contained in a letter from the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation, which had been informed by the Auckland association that a substantial licence for cotton piece goods had been granted on Canada. 'Oie association asked if any special features were involved, and if the practice was to be general. The Minister said, if circumstances so warranted, applicants might show alternative sources of supply on their applications, which would be considered on their merits. He would not agree on a matter of general policy to permit importation of cotton piece goods from Canada, but he had agreed to give consideration to special cases. The federation stated it knew of only two cases where licences had been issued on Canada for cotton piece goods, and in both instances the facts submitted justified the expenditure of dollars. The practice was not a general one.
