STUDIES HAMPERED

MAKESHIFT QUARTERS

The interference with the studies of Training College students caused by the occupation of the college as an auxiliary hospital and their being required to use makeshift quarters in the university college, was mentioned at the meeting of the University College Council yesterday. Hopes were expressed that the present conditions would be definitely ended prior to the commencement of the academic term next vear.

Referring to correspondence received on the council's representations the president, Mr. W. H. Cocker, said it was important in the interests of both institutions that the present arrangements should not continue beyond the end of the year. Both would suffer should they not cease then. The principal of the Training College, Mr. I). M. Rae. said he was not sure whether the hospital block at the Epsom Infirmary would be completed in time to relieve the calls on the college.

"The present position is largely due to the effect of the social security scheme," he said. "If it had been due to a national or military emergency we would have put up with the matter." He was very grateful to the university authorities, but both institutions were being put to a lot of trouble unnecessarily. The practical side of the Training College students' work was suffering to at least 50 per cent. He hoped they could fully depend on the assurance that the college would be vacated.
