AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION VALUABLE EDUCATION WORK THE ELECTION OF OFFICERS Special mention of the large number of swimmers serving with the fighting forces overseas was made in the report presented at the annual meeting of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last night. A member of the Otahuhu Club, Sergeant A. Box. had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. Sympathy was expressed with the relatives of Messrs. A. Black, McGerty and Mrs. E. Johnston, whose deaths had occurred during the year. 'ln addition to being chaperon of Auckland teams. Mrs. Johnston had for many years been a keen member of the Parnell Club; Mr. Black, of the Waitemata Club, was father of Miss M. Black, a prominent swimmer; and Mr. McGerty was the Newmarket Club's delegate to the centre. During the year two carnivals each had been held by the Waitemata, Mount Eden and Newmarket Clubs, and one by the Otahuhu Club. The Ponsonby, Parnell and Nortli Shore Clubs had all conducted club events. The centre was represented at the national intermediate and junior championship meeting in New Plymouth, three titles being won. The experience would be of benefit to the boys and girls competing in these events. The centre greatly appreciated the services of Mr. W. Elwarth, as manager, and the late Mrs. E. Johnston, as chaperon. Splendid work as coach had al.so been rendered by Mr. Elwarth, 10 Auckland championships having been won by his pupils. A modified learn-to-swim campaign had been conducted by the centre.

The annual report was adopted, ns also were the balance-sheet and financial statement, which showed a much improved position. A satisfactory season was reported by the educational officer, Mr. F. W. Grey. Certificates issued numbered (>5Ol, an increase of 1289 on the figures for the previous season. A further 830 certificates had been sisued from Auckland to the Bay of Plenty district, Valued assistance in teaching children to swim was received from Mrs. A. Raper and Messrs. T. King and C. E. Bernard. The meritorious achievement of the Kowhai Intermediate School, which qualified for 170 certificates. gaining the largest number of awards in New Zealand for the third year in succession. was warmly commended. Similarly, the Tauranga District High School was congratulated on gaining 418 awards. It was stated that 90 per cent of the pupils were able to swim. "No praise is too high for Mr, Grey," said Mr. T. The centre approved the action of the management committee in nominating Messrs. 11. W. Moore and C. R. Worden for lifemembership of the New Zealand Amateur .Swimming Association, and in recommending Mr. A. Rowlands, of Whangarei, and Mr. L. Richardson. Mrs. A. Raper and Miss E. Tilsley, for the award of the New Zealand swimming blazer, preference being requested for Mr. Richardson and Miss Tilsley. Dr. T. IT. Pet tit was appointed the centre's delegate to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Council in Christchurch next Sunday and Monday. It was agreed to donate .€2 2s for a presentation to bo made by centres to the retiring president of the New Zealand Council. Mr. T. G. Dunn, of Christchurch. in recognition of his many years' service to swimming. first as honorary treasurer to the council and later as president. The centre decided to nominated Dr. Pettit for the office of president of the council. A motion of thanks was passed to the retiring- honorary treasurer. Mr. H. E. Bennett, for (he efficiency with which he had performed his duties for several years. Tt was decided (o send letters of sympathy to the patron. Sir. Ernest Davis, at the death of his mother, and to Mr. V. Trott. an officer of (he centre, wishing him a. speedy recovery from his illness.
