NEARING COMPLETION
SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAY [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION*] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Work is being pushed on with all speed, and shifts and gangs are being doubled wherever possible, in an effort to have the northern section of the South Island main trunk railway, from Blenheim to Kaikoura, in operation by the last week in December, the scheduled date of completion. The only work to be done is the actual laying of the rails for 21 miles, and the ballasting of the track for about 2S miles. There seems to be little doubt that the line will be open by the time stated. Whether the claim that the southern section to Oaro will be opened by January can be fulfilled is, however, doubted in some quarters. The section to be completed is short, being only about five miles, but the route is through difficult country and much delay has been caused by slips and washouts.
