SMART TWO-YEAE-OLD SLEEPY FOX SHOWS DASH ORELIO ATTRACTS ATTENTION The good opinion formed earlier regarding the two-year-old Sleepy Fox was confirmed at Takanini yesterday, when the youngster shaped in most attractive style over four furlongs. The dasli shown by Oreiio in his gallop with Lovaals over tsoven i'urlony.s was reniiiiisivji I of his best ionn. A sound ell'ort over JU furlongs by The Dozer, and a smart live furlongs by Cambria aiul Gi'yjax were other features of the. 11 ials on the middle grass track. The poles were out 20 feet and the going was jrood. Sleepy Fox (Coleman), Tweedsmuir ll'rebcs). Houe.vwood (Burgess) and Gold Age iLund] were sent irom me barrier, inuir being slow lo move. Sleepy Fox. beginning w) th rare dash for one of limited experience, soon had a comfortable lead, lo score decisively over four furlongs in 50 o-ss, after running the first two furlongs in 21 3-SS. Sleepy Fox is a most, impressive galloper. They ran next to the rails, where the going was faster than the middle grass track. Honours over five furlongs were shared by Cambria (Dixon) and Gayjax (McMinn), who were together at the end of their ta»sk in l.ci 3-3, the last three furlongs requiring 10s. FINAL GALLOPS TRIALS AT HASTINGS CENTREPOISE ift GOOD FORM (0.C.) ' HASTINGS. Tuesday There was nothing outstanding in the final gallops this morning of horses engaged at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, to be held on Thursday and Saturday, the form displayed by two-year-olds being disappointing. Travencore. a fancied candidate for the Hastings Stakes, has been under a_ cloud since Sunday as the result of a hock injury. However, this afternoon Traveucore was given a short sprint and there is every chance that (he youngster will contest the Stakes on Thursday. In running three furlongs in 38 l-5s on the course proper Prairie Girl did best of the two-year-olds. Gold Quest, St. Boswells — Hilton Gorse filly and Mr. Standfast —Collen Gain eolt took 2-5s for the same journey. Palor? heat Glen Doone and Fescue in 38 3-fis. APPRENTICE RIDERS GOOD INNINGS AT PAEROA An interesting feature of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club's Spring Meeting at Paeroa was the prominence of apprentice riders. Tlie.v gained 11 firsts, nine seconds and nine thirds. The leader among them was R. Stockley, who piloted three winners. Another well in the iimelight was S. Waddell. with two firsts, two seconds and two thirds. W. Elisor also rude well for one win. three seconds and a third. In addition J. Gillan, W. Skii'lington, K. C'ollett, V. Dye and J. Williamson each rode a winner and F. Bezuely. C. B. Goulsbro, L. C. Brown, F. Hain, K. McMinn and B. Markwick steered minor place-getters. The success of the apprentice riders is very gratifying. The standard of horsemanship in the Dominion has not been very high iri recent years arid we have been poorly off for really good horsemen. Some of the apprentices who were in the public eye at l'aeroa are showing more than average ability, and, with the benefit of experience, they are likely to he prominent in the list of winning jockeys 1 n the next few years. Nowadays owners and trainers arc nor. slow to avail themselves of the services of promising apprentices and the boys who attracted attention at Paeroa should find plenty of opportunities to display their talent. i TO CORRESPONDENTS "Racegoer," Grey Lynn.—The horses J. M. Buchanan has iri training and ready to race at present are Royce, Balashiel and Bright Idea. APPEAL DISMISSED The appeal of the jockey G. Gilchrist against his suspension for one month by the judicial committee of the Avondaie Jockey Club was heard by the Auckland District Committee yesterday.
