FITNESS OF FLYING ACRE The -President's Handicap 2t Paeroa on Monday provided one of the most thrilling finishes it would be possible to witness. No fewer than nine horses had winning chances in the straight, and at the end the margins between the placed horses were a short head and a neck. The winner. Flying Acre, worked h;s way into a handy position before the field was far on the journey, and he saved a good deal of ground which others were forced to cover, with the result that he held on very resolutely at the end. The success of Flying Acre did not come out of turn because he won only one race last season, and it was a case of a useful performer being caught right at the peak of fitness. He is trained by J. W. Cathro, who also won the following event with Manuma. The runner-up, Yolifox, also registered a solid performance, and she appears likely to make an early return to the winning list as Bfle is still susceptible to improvement The performance of Young Paddon in finishing third was in direct contrast to his effort on the first day, when, after forcing the pace in the Poland Cup, he collapsed some distance from home and was left hopelessly in the rear. On this occasion he was never in the picture until the straight was reached, and then unwound a brilliant burst on the extreme outside that took him. close to victory. Apart from his poor display in the Poland Cup, loting Paddon has raced consistently well in the past few months. Others besides the place-getters who took a prominent part in the finish were Cornish, Philermip, Kasni.in. Erlick. Trisr Station ami Sure Pay, and they were all in it at the distance. Momentarily it appeared as if Cornish might win, but he weakened after having made a big effort and having none the best of the early running. Philornuo ran one of his best races, am' it must have been just in the last few et rid as that he was deprived of a place. Pbilrmyp was one of the outsiders of f lip field and was at long odds. The win favourite Te Kawifi was prominent until the home turn, where he began to drift, and he gave no trouble at the finish. Te Kawiti is looking well, and, although he has won pretioiisJv at Pneron. he may be more at home on b-frzer courses The place favourite Trier S'ation had a perfect run in on the rails behind the pace-ni;>lters, but he failed in the last liaif-furlong. The third fancv Xed Cuttle Was never a possibility. HUNTERS' STEEPLER in the list of weights for the Auckland .Kacing Club's Spring Meeting. published yesterday, Prival. 0.5, appeared in the Hunters' steeplechase instead of Rival, 9.11. LOYAL DIRECT FOAL Loyal Direct, by Grattan Loyal from .Harebell Direct, has produced a filly foal to i?ter Bingen. In the 103S-30 season. Loyal Direct raced consistently for G. McNickle. Securing five firsts, five seconds and three thirds, to the value of £785.
