HOSTILE CROWD

EXPELLANT IIOOTEl) SUCCESS OF RADIANT VAALS LITTLE ROSE BEATS HINKLER A hostile demonstration was made against iixpelinnt when he won the Parawai Handicap, for which ho was second fancy to Sure Pay, after h aving , been beaten into fourth earlier in the second division of the Stewards' Hack Handicap, for which lie was favourite, at the i'hames Jockey Club's Winter Meeting on Saturday. Spectators lined tho birdcage fence, jeering, hooting and calling "Put him out." The stipendiary steward, Air. 13. N. Saudilands, reported to the press after tho Stewards' Hack Handicap that Expellant was checked through getting on the hoels of another horse and the demonstration might have been avoided if this information had been made known to the public by means of the loud-speaker system. On the strength of good track work since his win at To Awamutu in June Rival was made first and second favourite for the Maramarua Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, but he was well beaten by Conflagration, who showed improvement, and paid double figures. Belsander and Conflagration made the running, Conflagration going out clear over the last half-mile and winning by six lengths from Rival. The first and second gave none of the others a chanco in tho final stages, hut there was a great tussle for third, Geneial Ruse just beating ('oniric. Verulam Unplaced Tho each-way favourite, Verulam. had every chance out in front in the first division of the Stewards' Hack Handicap with Mihinui, hut she stopped quickly in the straight and finished well back. Verulam and Mihinui were soon clear and they came into the straight a couple, of lengths ahead of Elise, with Glenbevan and Glen Connell handy. Once in line for the post Glenbevan and Glen Connell came through, Glenbevan winning by half a head. Elise was a length away third and Royal Melody was fourth followed by Mihinui and Ebony Star. The winner was well handled by G. Cameron and just held off Glen Connell. who finished better than usual. The second fancy. Harmony, scored very decisively in the second division of the Stewards' nack Handicap, for which Expellant was favourite. Judgment and Hogarth were in front when the field settled down and they led info the straight from Harmony, Gayjax and Expellant. As soon as they straightened up Harmony ran to the front and she was not troubled to win by a length and a-half from Gayjax, who cut Hogarth out of second by half a head. Expellant, finishing strongly, was a close fourth followed by Lady Bambury, Betterman and Judgment. Harmony handled tho heavy going in great style. As the result of his victory at the nontotalisator meeting at "Matamata recently, Kena was made an each-way favourite for the Hikntaia Hurdles and he duly won. Kena was a long way back over the first- couple of fences, but ho moved lip to join Classic and Etaro in the lend with five furlongs to sro. Kena had Etaro beaten at the turn and ran home a comfortable winner by two lengths. Etaro held on gamely for second and Maxown, always handily placed, was a length away third. Stokowski was fourth, followed by Black Musk, who made only a fair showing, and Classic. It was the first start of Classic over hurdles and he might, have done better only for running down several fences badly. Kena was very visrorously ridden by the lightweight E. V. Dye. An Attractive Victory Splendidly handled by G. Cameron, the fourth and sixth fancy, Radiant Vaals. gained •in attractive victory in (he President's ! "andicap. Gamos and Kaspian made the running from Erlick, Radiant Vaals and Young Paddon. Four furlongs from home Gamos went on in front, but Radiant Vaals was always handy and soon took his measure in the straight to bent him by two and ahalf lengths. Kilcash, after a long way back for the first half-mile and coming on the outside, finished well to be a length away third. Youne Paduon. who got into a pocket and drifted io the rear crossing the top. Very Glad and Lord Waitangi were in a bunch. In spite of a penalty of seven pounds for his success in the Maramarua Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, Conflagration was victorious again in the Thames Steeplechase, in which liis win return was in the vicinity of double figures. The each-way favourite, Allegretto, attempted to win all the way and at one stage he must have been the best part of 100 vards in front only to tire and finish well back. Conflasrr,*tion did not become prominent until about five furlongs from home, when he moved up smartly and was always the winner in the last half-mile. Clansman battled on gamely to be six lengths back second and Floodlight was three lengths away third. Kinkle was fourth followed by Allegretto and Fat Boy, who were well back. Baldric baulked at the last fonce when wel beaten and Jewelled Girdle fell in, the first round. Most of the field cut up badly at the en Revelling in the holding going, Expellant was responsible for a nice performance in defeating the open sprinters in tho Parawai Handicap, for which he was second in demand to Sure Pay. Expellant was not well placed early, but moved up quickly to head the pace-makers, Biddy Girl and Town Section. at the tnrn and in the end he won easilv from Town Section, who fought on gamely. The favourite, Sure Pay. was half a length away third, failing to finish quite as well as expected after moving up at the turn. Queen City finished on for fourth followed bv Chary, Biddy Girl and Valminl. The improving Little Rose registered her best performance to date when she won the Ngalea Hack Handicap. She came on the outside at the turn and stayed «n to win bv a length and a-rjuarter from Hinkler, who finished very solidly after receiving a check. Regal Fox was a creditable third, weakening after looking dangerous when lie secured an openiner on tho rails. Stratiorcj was a close fourth ahead of Acrobat- and Glen Connell. Hinkler looked unlucky and Regal Fox should improve.
