GIRL DEEP-SEA DIVER
FEARLESS UNDER WATER
WORK IN SYDNEY HARBOUR SYDNEY, August 6
Sydney has a woman deep-water diver. She is pretty 19-year-old Nancy Heliings, who. during the week, is a demure salesgirl in a departmental store. She made her fifth descent last week-end in search of a magneto which had fallen from a .launch in 20 feet of water near one of Sydney's wharves. She was working with her father, a diver of 20 years' experience. A crowd of her girl friends was at the wharf to watch her don the diving suit of a total weight of 1801b. Two long knives to protect her from sharks were included in her equipment. While Miss Heliings groped about on the muddv sea bed. her father worked the air pump and talked of his daughter with pride. From the harbour bed Miss Heliings tapped code messages on a line to her father. She tramped round but failed to find the magneto. The first thing Miss Heliings did after her helmet was unscrewed was to powder her face and use her lipstick.
