RAIN AND SUNSHINE WIDE RANGE OF TEMPERATURES With the total rainfall during the month in Auckland of i .56in., according to figures taken by Mr. S. M. lallop, Government observer, July was a wet month compared with the corresponding period last year when only 2.60 in. of rain fell, but that July was the driest since 19,56. The rainfall last mouth was I.BBin. above the average. The record is 12in., which was recorded in July, 1938. Kaiu fell on 18 days last month, the maximum day's fall being 2.11 in. on July 23. The mean barometer reading of 30.102 in. last month was slightly lower than for July, 1910, and the readings ranged between a maximum of 30.641 in. and" a minimum of 29.70-lin. The mean temperature of 51.22 degrees for the month was higher than that for the previous July, when it was 50.24 degrees, which in turn was higher than in July, 1939, when the mean was 49.46 degrees. However, temperatures last month fluctuated more than last year, and on extreme maximum of 63.2 degrees on the 26th and an extreme minimum of 34.5 degrees on the 17th were recorded. The corresponding figures for the moath last year were 61.3 degrees and 36.5 degrees respectively. The mean maximum and minimum for the month were 56.91 degrees and 45.54 degrees _ respectively, fast year's figures being 55.78 degrees and 44.71 degrees. In spite of last month bemg wetter than July last year, a higher total of sunshine was recorded, the figure this year being 171 hours 48 minutes, compared with 145 hours 12 minutes. There were four days without sunshine, against three days for the month last year. A maximum of nine hours 24 minutes of sunshine recorded on the 23rd of last month was the same as the maximum in July lastyear. Last month is described by Mr. xallop as wintry with two heavy fails of rain and a spell of tine bright days in the middle of the month. Frost was recorded on five mornings.
