DEATH IN ISLANDS
MR. STEPHEN SAVAGE A life of public service in the Cook Islands ended with the death at Rarotonga on July 2o of Mr. Stephen Savage, aged 67. Born at Thames, MrSavage went to llarotonga many years ago to work for a trader. Later he served in many branches of the admin-, istration and under every resident, commissioner. He had been registrar of Courts, chief interpreter. Government printer, resident agent and Commissioner of the High Court. Mr. Savage was considered the leading authority on native lore and history. and on the language and dialects of the Cook Islands, and was a wellknown Polynesian student. A monument- of years of painstaking work is the first dictionary of the language, which he completed recently. Tie as married twice. His father. Mr. \ aleiitino Savage, a veteran boathuikler, is aged 99, and is living in Auckland.
