Sir, —The petulant blast by Mr. Semple in reply to criticism as to the state of the Home Guard was quite unnecessary. The criticism was perfectly just and not the outcome of political prejudice.

As a company commander, I can assure readers that it is the splendid type of responsible citizen wanting to be organised and trained, ignoring broken promises, and still prepared to sacrifice many hours of leisure, that is keeping'the Home Guard where it is to-day. J. T. Beck.
