WINTER FAIR
ST. MARY'S HOMES In aid of St. Mary's Homes, Otahuhu, a winter fair was held in the Town Hall concert chamber yesterday. The ! stalls, which were well stocked with goods, were in the charge of representatives of the various parishes, with Mrs. R. C. G. Keith as organising secretary. The fair was officially opened by the Mayoress, Mrs. J. A. C. Allum, who was introduced by Archdeacon P. Houghton. Mrs. Allum said it was gratifying to find that the excellent work being done at St. Mary's Homes was being recognised at the present time when many calls were being made on the public for patriotic purposes. For a long period of years the homes had filled an urgent social need, over 1000 mothers having passed through them since they were established in 1884. It must be remembered, Mrs. Allum said, that the costs of management were rising, and sheappealed to the public to continue to give their support. In thanking Airs. Allum for the interest she had taken in St. Mary's Homes, Archdeacon Cowie outlined the excellent work being done for the girls in building up a new self-respect and helping to restore a Christian cnarncter. Mr. C. K. Grierson, chairman of tho committee of management, also spoke.
