FJshury. yesterday. There was no real reason, he said, why anv able-bodied man should be out ot work.
The office was busily engaged in seeking men for the building of minesweepers, and was even borrowing qualified men from their employers. Fniployers were co-operating well and in many cases were paying 111011's contributions to superannuation funds. Boatbuilding firms not engaged on war contracts were assisting, even to the extent of lending the whole of their staffs.
The change-over in the farming industry irom butter to cheese production had created a heavy demand for etuis, sail 1 Mr. Flsbury, and an acute shortage of soldcivrs had developed. Some firms were increasing output about 100 per cent, Fvcn if they had already left the trade, soldcrers who were physically tit were invited to got into touch with the office. An 11-hour day was being worked in each shift.
