THEATRES IN CITY
IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED
I CITY COUNCIL ACTS The question of improvements needed to bring several city theatres up to the requirements of the by-laws was before the City Council last night, when reports upon them were received from the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, and the Works Committee.
Regarding His Majesty's Theatre, Mr. Tyler detailed a number of improvements required, including some which he regarded as the minimum to enable the theatre to continue in use. These related mainly to the enlargement of certain exits and the provision of more aisle space The Works Committee, which had considered a letter from J. C. Williamson, Limited, recommended that a licence be issued, provided the minimum requirements were carried out, the council reserving its right to review the licence yearly, and the minimum requirements to be considered sufficient for the period, of the war only. It was resolved to call upon the owners of the Tivoli, Strand, State and Liberty Theatres, which were being carried on without licences, to apply for them within one month. Proposals from the owners of the Strand and State Theatres for schemes of improvement were referred to the Works Committee with power to act.
