ARAWA TRUST BOARD
NEW REGULATIONS METHOD OF ELECTING MEMBERS (0.C.) ROTORUA, Tuesday Regulations concerning the Arawa Trust Hoard have been gazetted. They have been adopted by the Government 011 the recommendation of the board following a series'of tribal discussions. Among the changes in constitution is the increase 111 the number of board members from 18 to 19, the additional member being a representative of the Arawa returned soldiers, who have appointed Captain H. Vereoe. Not only shall no candidate represent more than one sub-tribe, but it has . been agreed by the Arawas that where a person has, interests in a number of tribal areas I he shall nominate in which sub-tribe' he shall exercise his privileges of discussion ami election. Ifc had been proposed that electoral rolls should be prepared on the same system as in borough wards or county ridings, but the Native Department decided that this would be too cumbersome. If after a public meeting no agreement can be reached on tho appointment of members to the board, the names of the candidates will be submitted to the Native Land Court for a decision. No member will receive payment for his services, but will receive an allowance to cover the cost of accommodation and meals while attending a meeting of the board. Previously members were paid £1 a day. |
