OFFICIAL COUNT
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS PROGRESS IN CITY HOPE OF EARLY RESULT It is now hoped that the official count of the votes cast in the munici-| ,>al election in the city area on Saturlay will be completed by Friday after-; noon. It is desired to have the de-j •laration of the election of the suc•essful candidates made before the ,veek-end so that the required notice may he given to the new members of cite City Council of the first meeting if that body, now tentatively fixed for lext Wednesday. The scrutiny of the rolls and the counting of votes on the council issuewas continued by the large special staff ii the Town Hall concert chamber yes-■ ierdav. So far this staff has been work->' •iig daily from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a break of one hour for lunch, but < to obtain the results as early as pos- ■ sible the city returning officer, Mr. N. W. Kenny, has decided to work the i staff for an additional three hours to-, night.
The scrutiny of the informal votes recorded was again in progress yesterday and it appeared that many electors had entered the polling booths with jnly a slight understanding of what they were required to do. It was obvious thafa large number of people had marked their papers incorrectly and iad placed them in the ballot boxes, lot understanding that, on application, to the officer in charge of the polling place, they could have been provided '.vith another paper. In addition to the large number of informal votes, the returning officer has to consider about 520 declaration votes. He has to satisfy himself that those who secured declaration forms had the right to vote in this manner, j As each claim has to be investigated some delay must necessarily occur before the votes so cast can be added to the j totals. ;
