BUTTER'S PREMIER PLACE CHANGES DUE TO WAR The value of butter exported from New Zealand in the financial year ended March 31 was £17,824.120, an increase of £1,479,481 on the 'previous year's figure, while the quantity exported -was 8317 tons higher at 128,938 tons. Butter was again easily the most valuable commodity in New Zealand's export trade, which was valued at the record figure of £70,434,576. Next to butter came wool, at £15.120.578, showing an increase of £2,480,853; then lamb, £9.763.1)52; cheese, £3.326.560 higher at £9.421,004; beef, £2.863,548; * mutton, £2,383.633; pork. £1,867,650; and sheepskins without- wool, £1.623,902. In establishing a new high record, the total value of exports showed an increase of 19.3 per cent on the 1939-40 figure, and exceeded the previous record year of 1937-38 by 9.5 per cent. War conditions were responsible for many notable variations shown by the returns. Exports of cheese increased by 39 per cent in quantity and 55 per cent in value, while beef exports increased by 77 per cent in quantity and 96 per cent in value. Other notable increases in value, were recorded by sheepskins, pork, lamb, mutton, cattle hides, rabbitskins and tallow. In the case of wool, frozen lamb and frozen mutton, _ the increases were achieved in spite of smaller shipments. Apples recorded a. fall of 50 per cent in value, while the export of .pears practically ceased. Sausage casings, onions, casein and kauri gum all recorded marked decreases.
