Tlio police wore told that, tho militiamen were trespassing on railway property. An officer at Penrith police station said that railway oflieials had asked the police to make the investigation. "They thought they might have been enemy agents, disguised in soldiers* uniioiniH, he added. "Later, the police were told at Wallgrove camp that the men had been detailed lor military duties, and the matter was dropped." Reconnaissances of the are carried out regularly by militia trainees. Militiamen are required to work out how much explosive would bo needed t to destroy the bridge in a military act ion. "\\'e were just starting to scramble over (lie bridge whfni r> po!:n>-;v.r.n C£.::u: along." one ol the militiamen said. "Because we could not produce written authority from the Railway Department to go on tho bridge, our names Ave re taken."
