W.E.A. PLAY
ODETS' "GOLDEN BOY" SUCCESSFUL OPENING An approriativo audience gave an enthusiastic reception to a plav in tlie | modern style, "Golden Hoy,'' by Clif- ! lord Odets. which was presented to a ! capacity house hy the W.10.A. Dramatic i Club at the Old Grammar School on : Saturday night. An allegory in three ! acts, the play tells the story of a young violinist who cannot obtain sullicient i satislaction Irom his music and turns I to prize-lighting. How lie achieved success is revealed in the play, and what he lost in the process is the real theme. Characterised by fast dialogue and I action, llie play was marked by some line performances of an anonymous least, which contained only two women ' plavers. A high standard was set all round, but some outstanding acting , was seen from the players who took ! the parts of old Mr. Bonaparte, his | son. the Golden Hoy, and Kddie Fuscli, j a gangster. i The staging was particularly successful, a permanent set being used for I the 12 scenes, changes being made by i project ions on to the back ol the stage j by 'means of light. Sound elTccts were i well handled, particularly the noises of nlie crowd at the prize-tight, as heard from a dressing-room under the arena. Incidental music used was the Symphony in D Minor, by Cesar Fratick. J The plav will again be presented to- | night, to-morrow and Wednesday.
