PREVIOUS GLOUCESTER CUPS The Duke of Gloucester Cup, won at Timaru yesterday lvf Nurse (Mr. (I. Paul), is the first to be held during the war. although there has been no break in the continuity of the contests since they were inaugurate,! in IDIUI.

The last previous race for the - Cup was held by the Tnranaki Hunt Club at New Plymouth on September 1030, but the South Canterbury Jockey Club did not utilise its permit until the end of the present season, hence the gap of over 20 months between the events.

The inaugural race for the Cup took place at Mftrtoi in 1030 and was won by Royal Papa, ridden by Mr. W. R. Duncan. The first South Island contest was' staged by the Canterbury Jockey Club, when Mr. G. James won on SIR'. The permit was allotted to Hawke's Bay, Mr. G. G. Beat son winning with Soho. The race was then transferred to Dunedin, vhere Mr. K. M. White scored on Travenna. I'he winner at Now Plymouth was Windsor Clief. ridden by Mr. R. Butler. Next season's eoitest has been allocated to tho Wanganui jockey Club.
