TARANAKI CELEBRATIONS [BIT TKI.KGJIAI'H —I'll loss ASSOCIATION] NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday
Tarannki's celebration of 100 years of Kuropean settlement was opened today with special thanksgiving services. Children attended a service in Pukekura Park this morning, and a citizens' service was held this afternoon near tho memorial to the first settlors erected at Ngnniot.il Heach, close to where they landed on March ;il, J8 11. The Prime Minister, the lU. Hon. P. I'Yaser, and the .Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. \Y. 10. Parry, are visiting New Plymouth for the celebrations. The Prime Minister unveiled a memorial to the Pev. Charles Creed, the first minister of religion in Taranaki, who was waiting on the beach to welcome the arrivals on the William Bryan, the first, colonist ship. The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall arrived by aeroplane to-dav to participate in the celebrations t o-m orrow.
