INQUIRIES BY DEPARTMENT Difficulties faced by manufacturers in meeting the demand for perambulators, pushchairs and invalid chairs, because of a scarcity of materials, are being investigated by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. Restrictions 011 the importation of wheels j tyres, axles and steel are blamed by manufacturer;-; for the situation that has arisen. Following a conference in "Wellington between representatives of the industry and of the Industries, and Commerce Department, individual manufacturers are being asked. whether they _ desire that thoir industry should be licensed under the Industrial Efficiency Act, 1936, and should adopt the Licensed Industries General Regulations, 1940. In the meantime, the department is endeavouring to establish an axlemanufacturing industry, and it has asked that manufacturers' requirements in axles in excess of those covered by fifth period import licences should be ascertained. It has also asked that steps should be taken to have this quantity produced either by an individual manufacturer or by a minimum number of firms in the main centres.
