ROWING EVENTS

NIXON CUP TO AUCKLAND The Auckland Rowing Club won tho Nixon Cup on Saturday afternoon after a very keen race in which seven crews started. The race is an annual event for non-class fours and is held under the auspices of the Tamnki Yacht Club. The entries were comprised of throe crews from the Auckland club, two from Waitemata and two front West End. The course was from the lvohimarama Wharf to the Tamaki Clubhouse. The water was rather choppy at the start, but it improved over tho last part of the course. Mr. A. C. Borden was starter and Mr. W. A. Wilkinson judge. The result was:—Auckland No. '2 (E. Kichardson, M. Holland, K. Weber, P. Hall), I; West End No. (E. Johnson. D. Sullivan, ,1. Cmiiam, K. Bigelow).West End Xo. li if-',. Paper, R. Alexander, F. Tucker, E. Craies), The crews went away to a good start, West End No. 'J moving quickest, followed by Auckland Xo. Waitemata Xo. I and \Vc»t End No. li. As they settled down Auckland No. 'J forged slightly ahead, followed by West End No, 2, Waitemata No. I and Auckland No. I. At about the half-distance mark Auckland No. I and Waitemata in Xos. it and I positions, collided and eased up. Hy the time they were clear Ibo other crews had gained too big ii lead for them to be overtaken. As soon as the calm water was reached Auckland No. 'J took control and, 111 spite of determined challenges, the two West End crews could make no impression, Auckland winning by one and a-half lengths, with West End. No. one length away. North Shoro.—Trial fours for the W. Woods trophies were held during the week-end. Four crews took part and keen racing was witnessed. Results: —First heat: E. Martin, (!. Mctihie. M. Saba and W. I'enman beat K. Brlggs. V. Trayes, (). Topliss and li. Hutledge by two lengths. Second heat: (!. Jannor. F. Jit If 011. G. Cooke and K. Buckley beat ('. W'illelts, E. Hotham. ("1. Topliss and (!. Burgess by a canvas. Final: The crews were stroked by .Tanner and E. Martin. In a close race .Tanner's crew won by one-quarter of a length.
