BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP
LOUIS RETAINS HIS TITLE NEW YORK, Feb. 1 •Toe Louis in the 13th defence of his title as world heavy-weight boxing champion knocked out. Clarence Burman, a protege of Jack Dempsey, in the fifth 'round. The weights were:-—Louis, list Gib; Burman, 13st 01 b. The blood-smeared challenger wilted So the tloor after a right smash to the abdomen. As Burman fell Louis connected with a left hook to the head. Burman, who was responsible for ono of the most determined efforts ever made against Louis, received an ovation from the crowd. The ioser took the fight to_ Louis, who. however, carried more weight in bis punches. Louis' record since he won the title from Jim Braddock on a knock-out in 1937 is as follows: — August, 1937. —Outpointed lomniy farr. February, 1938.—Knocked out, Nathan Mann. April, 1938. —Knocked out Harry Thomas. June, 1938.—-Knocked out Max Schmeling. January, 1939. —Knocked out John Henry Lewis.
