OVERSEAS BALLOT

HEARING OF APPEALS COMMENCEMENT NEXT WEEK CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS A start with hearing service appeals from men drawn in the first overseas ballot will he made by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board next week. The board will also hear appeals from conscientious objectors who were called in the first and second territorial ballots. The first public sitting of the board will take place at Pukekohe Magistrates' Court at 10.30 a.m. on Thursday, when a small number of cases will be considered. A sitting at Papakura will be held on Friday. Formal business will be dealt with in the city earlier in the week, but the first public* sitting for the metropolitan area has not yet been arranged. The No. 1 Appeal Board has jurisdiction in the Whangarei and Auckland areas of the northern military district. Over 750 cases have been set down for its consideration, about half of which are based on the ground of conscientious objection, and affect men drawn in the three ballots. Mr. C. K. Orr Walker, S.M., is chairman of the board, and will have Mr T. P. McCready and Mr. A. M. Samuel associated with him. Mr. H. E. Hewlett and Mr. J. 0. Liddell are deputy-members.
