NAVY AND MERCHANT SHIPS [by telegraph —press association] \v E L LIX G T() X, Tll psd a y An assurance was given by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, that, the Navv bcaguo of New Zealand was fully alive to the needs ol the men ol the* Royal Navy and the Merchant Service, not only in tho provision of comforts during the war, but also in preparation for difficulties of the period to follow. Speaking at the opening of a conference at which plans were discussed for meeting the needs ol these men, be read a letter from Sir Svdney Freemantle in England expressing appreciation of the work done by the league in New Zealand and stressing that with the increased personnel of the Navy the needs wore greater than ever. 1/uxl Galway mentioned that there were many articles of clothing unsuitable through colour or other reasons lor tho Royal Nary, but which would lie thoroughly appreciated by men on merchant ships. Hi; expressed regret that this would be his last appearance at the council and assured members lie would endeavour to establish contact, with the Navy League in England and do his part to ensure that, its work* was carried on smoothly and effectively. Rest wishes were extended to the Governor-(Jeneral and Lady Gabvav and their family for a safe journey.
