MAORI'S TRIP IN CAR
The conversion of a rental motorcar on December 21 was admitted by a Maori labourer, Jack Pobata, aged 22 (Mr, Dickson), before Mr. F. H. Levien, S. M., in the Police Court yesterday. Detective-Sergeant Walsh said that accused called at a rental garage on December 23 and hired a car for the day. Under the agreement the car was due back at midnight, but it was not returned and not seen again until accused was arrested at Mangonui, North Auckland, on two charges of stealing benzine. In the Police Court at Mangonui accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on each of the two charges and he was at present serving that sentence. Counsel said that accused stole the benzine to bring the car back to Auckland.
Sentence of 18 months in a Borstal institution was imposed, and accused was ordered, under a special section of the Police Offences Act, to pay £ls 7s 6d for the hire of the car, and 15s for damage dona.
