THE FOURS CHAMPIONSHIP AUCKLAND RINKS BEATEN [by telegraph-press association] OHRISTCHURCH, Monday Although all the greens were slightly heavy to-day for the first half of the morning games in the rinks play of the New Zealand bowling tournament, because of Sunday's storm, they had dried out by lunch time and were running freely in the afternoon. The day started off with the usual thrills, the first being the defeat of a strong Auckland rink, It. V. Warman, R. Campbell, G. A. Deare arid W. Bremner, by J. Currie, J. I). Best, D. Stevenson, skipped by the Taieri veteran, W. Carswell, the final score being 24 —20. Carswell won his second game, 30 —10, against T. Poole, of Amberley. C. Spearman (R.S.A., Cliristchurch) started well by taking his first two games. He beat Scott. (Sydenham), 24 —19, and Stephenson (Nelson), 32 —-19. W. D. Ramsay (Shirley), who won all eight section games last year in Wellington, went do mi 29 —18 to A, Bell (Tauranga) in the morning game, but won his 'second against Conder (Lyall Bay), 25 —19. On the Elm wood green A. E. H. Christie beat the well-known local skip C. Madsen, 28—25, in the morning game, and then lost 24 —23 to J. R. Smith (Kelburn) in the afternoon. A. Hokitika four, skipped by J. S. Bain, beat E. C. la Frantz (Matai), 2.5 —18 in the morning, and T. Satterthwaite (Syreydon) 23-20 in the second game. On the United No. 1 Green another West Coast team, skipped by E. R. Moss (Karoro) won both games, defeating S. J. Snedden (Linwood) in the morning and T. Hubbard (Caversham) in the afternoon. Loss for Livingstone
The second highlight of the day came when F. Livingstone (Onehunga) lost one of his lives. In the morning he won from A. J. Green (Westport), 28—23, but A. G. Spiers (St. Kilda) ran out ahead 23—22 in the afternoon. Livingstone has with him W. Whittaker, J. W. T. Macklow and H. A. Robertson. R. J. Carbines. F. W. Oates, W. E. Hunt and R. S. Higginbotham (Ponsonby) lost their morning game to T. F. Chambers (Sumner), 23—13, but later put up corresponding figures, 32 —8, against J. Holgate (Mornington). The hard-fighting Dunedin skip T. Ferguson (Balmacewan) made things hard for his opponents. In the morning he defeated W. J. Caldwell (Maheno) 26 —17, and later put down T. H. Watts (Beckenham), 33 —14.
A. Besley (Sydenham), one of the hardest driving skips in Christ-church, scored twice. He beat Watts (Beckenham ), 25—24, and Caldwell (Maheno), 28 —11. C. Taylor (Sydenham), who has just celebrated his 80th birthday, and who was well up in post-section games of the singles, started off well by heating J. Du Feu (St. Alban's), 26 —21, and S. Larking (Beckenham), 24 —18. Although backed by a strong team J. R. Smith (Elmwood) failed to win either of his first two games. In the morning he was beaten by H. P. Perry (Thorndon), 21—19, and in the afternoon by P. H. Rowe (Ponsonby), 32—17. H. S. Maslin (Hawera), who had M. J. Squire as his third, beat S. C. K. Smith (North End, Invercargill), 32—14, and J. Chatfield (Edgeware), 27 —17.
Newly-formed Teams J. Dowland, who formerly played third for G. Claridge (Dunedin), has his own team this year, and scored a 34—25 win over J. Bary (Blenheim), and 31—18 over W. Brown (United), J. Turpin, former well-known local footballer, has come out with his own team this year, and started off well by scoring two wins. In the first game he beat A. W. Cullen (Thorndon), 33 —10, and in the second G. Williams (Edgeware). 32 —14. Tnrpin was second in R. Ha worth's team that won the fours championship in 1936. and he led for the same skip when they won the pairs the same year. P. Mi inn (Canterbury), who has a strong team, won both his games. He beat A. W. St. John (Nelson) in the morning. 27—17, and J. Coulter (North East Valley), 20 —17, in the afternoon. The four Martin brothers, skipped by J. S. Martin (Carlton), but who have entered from the United Club, went down 21 —20 to P. W. Smith (Thorndon), but scored a 28 —18 win over J. B. Hawkey (Timaru). A game watched with interest was that between R. Haworth (Canterbury) and J. I)- Marks (Christchurch). It proved no contest, however, as the former ran out an easy winner, 29—11, this being Haworth's second win for the day. The Dunedin skip K. Morrison notched two wins, beating E. C. Scales (Ashburv), 26 —22, and R. Burgess (Woolston), 26 —18. R. E. McNish (Canterbury), another of the early choices to be among the finalists, ecored two wins. Against T. G. Fox (Christchurch) he won 29 —12, and put down M. J. Carey (Thorndon), 27 —18. The first* eight points scored were obtained by W. J. Crawford (Otago), playing against L. Goldfinch (Wellington), but in spite of this handicap the Wellington skip tied on the last head and eventually won the game.
