RECLAIMING WASTE
RESPONSE BY AUCKLAND MINISTER GRATIFIED "The generous response to the appeal for the reclamation of waste has been gratifying," said the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in an interview yesterday. "Preliminary returns show that Auckland City has contributed 2ocwt. of aluminium, 36cwt. of brass, and 17cwt. of copper," he said. "From other parts of the Auckland Province we have secured llcwt. of aluminium. lOcwt. of copper and IGcwt. of brass and bronze."' The Minister added that in addition, Auckland city had contributed 30cwt. of lead and Gcwt. of zinc, while from other areas in the province 3cwt. of aluminium, o-ewt. of brass and bronze, one ton of lead and one ewt. of zincwere awaiting transmission to the central collecting depot. In the Bay of Plenty 6} tons of cast iron were available. The Minister thanked the Auckland committee and the public, and made special reference to the work of Dr. E. P. Neale, secretary of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Sullivan also made an appeal for the continuation of the work. lie said that the collection of waste paper would be undertaken in the near future, and it was expected to salvage 15,000 tons a year.
