WAGES INCREASE
EXEMPTION PLEA FAILS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] \VEI.I.I NGTON. Friday The Arbitration Court was not satisfied that the cases stated when private bote] owners applied lor exemption from the general order increasing wages by 5 per cent to meet the increased cost of living were truly indicative of the position of the industry as a whole, and the application was refused. The grounds were that the businesses bad already suffered severely from the increased cost of living, a decrease in patronage through the war, and the rationing of petrol. The judgment of the Court mentions that the wages paid were lower than those in the licensed hotel industry.
