WHARF REGULATIONS

MISUSE OF A PERMIT TWO MEN SENT TO PRISON "1 am taking the most lenient view I can of this offence," said the magistrate, Mr. C. P. Orr. Walker, in the Police Court yesterday, when sentencing Henry Jones, labourer, aged 25, and William Towson Lowthcr, seaman, aged 22, for breaches of the Shipping Safety Emergency Regulations. Jones admitted going on board an overseas-.ship at Central Wharf on November 16 without a permit, and Lowthcr admitted that he aided and abetted Jones. Sub-Inspector Calwell said the police viewed the offence very seriously. Lowther obtained a pass from the shipping company to enter the wharf and secured a job on the ship in question. He then lent his pass to Jones, who was accosted by the wharf police at the top of the ship's gangway. "Getting on board in this manner was a species of fraud," said the magistrate. Each accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
