FIRE AT OTAHUHU

HOTEL KITCHEN DAMAGED Considerable damage was caused to the kitchen of the Wembley Private Hotel, Otaliubu, by fire shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday. The hotel, which is tenanted by Mrs. L. Piper, is part of a large two-storey block of buildings including a picture theatre, several shops and dwellings and a printing works. The block is owned by Mr. T. A. Bennett, of Epsom. The fire originated in the front of the kitchen which abuts the hotel at the back of the block. Heavy clouds of smoko and sheets of flame were issuing from tl\e verandah roof when the Otaliuhu brigade arrived. A strong pressure of water was directed on the outbreak which was suppressed before it could spread to the main block. Woodwork of the kitchen was destroyed and fittings were damaged by smoke and water.
