CLOSING OF SEASON SUCCESS FOR ALL GOLDS SOUTH AUCKLAND DEFEATED A bright exhibition of Rugby League football was witnessed at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when representative playefs of past years, styled as All Golds, met for the first time in a match against South Auckland. The local team, which won by 31 points to 18, was neatly attired in all gold jerseys ;and black and gold stockings. This match marked the close of the 1940 season. There was some good back play and in this department the All Golds were superior. A feature of the game was the excellent goalkickintj -by C. Dufty. who converted five tries. Some of his shots were from wide angles. A trophy for annual competition between cxreuresentiitive players was donated by Mr. L. Lees, and presented to S. Prentice, captain of the winning team at the conclusion of the name. About 3000 people witnessed the game. The ball wns kicked off by Mr. C. Dunning, one of the original All Gold team which toured England in 1907-08. South Auckland led at half-time by 15 points to 10. For the All Golds, tries were scored by Hardgrave (2), Minchnm, Sathcrloy. Hunt and McLaughlin, Dufty converting five. For South Auckland, Sherlock (2), Smith and Scott, scored tries,, SkPlton converting three. Mr. W. Minchain was referee. ? . • OLD BOYS' ASSOCIATION The New Zealand Rugby League Old Boys' Association tendered a complimentary dinner at the Hotel Auckland on Saturday evening, when the South Auckland players and local officials were its guests. The chairman. Mr. Gordon Campbell, wolcomed the visitors and expressed a nope that the function would be an annual one. Mr. G. Grey Campbell, chairman of the Auckland Rusrby League, in reply said the meeting of the All Golds and South Auckland was another milestone in the history of the game. He wished the Old Boys' Association every success. In replying to the toast of the New Zealand Rugby League, Mr. J. Watson said the new organisation was a welcome addition to the social activities of the code. Mr. L. Lees was thanked for his donation of a cup. Mr. W. Opie, secretary of the Old Boys' Association. paid a tribute to the early pioneers of the code, and all present stood in silence in memory of those old players now deceased.
