OBITUARY
MR. G. T. NICCOL "The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. George Turnbull Niccol, aged 80, of Arney Road, Remuera. Mr. Niccol was well known as a shipbuilder, as his father was before him. As a young man he entered his father's business, and later took chargei of it. He became the owner of a large fleet of vessels employed both in the coastal and the intercolonial trades. About 35 years ago Mr. Niccol was appointed managing-director of the Kaipara Steamship Company, and he was also prominently concerned in the management of the Northern Steamship Company. He had a number of other business interests, and was at one time associated with land development schemes in North Auckland. MR. THOMAS PATON The death has occurred of Mr. Thomas Paton. of Papakura, aged 87. Born of Scottish parents at Valparaiso, South America, in 1853. he was taken to Scotland two years later. In 1864 he left Glasgow with his parents in the sailing ship Viola, arriving in Auckland in 1865 after a voyage of four months. After* working on the building of the railway to Mr. Paton took up land at Ness Valley, Clevedon, farming there until he settled in Papakura in 1912. He was a keen ploughman and won many prizes in ploughing contests. He was one of the oldest members of the Papakura Bowling Club. He is survived by two sons and six daughters. There are 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
MISS MARY McLENNAN The death has occurred at Howick of Miss Mary McLennan, aged 85, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Duncan McLennan. Miss McLennan was born at Papaktira and lived all her life there. She was a supporter of the Presbyterian Church and one of the foundation members of the Papakura Croquet Club. She is survived by two brothers and one sister. COMMANDER R. H. RYAN [by telegraph OWN correspondent] DTJftEDIN, Saturday Cabled advice has been received of the death on active service of Commander Richard Hammersley Ryan, Royal Navy. He served on the New Zealand station a few. years ago on both the Diomede and Dunedin, and it was during this term of service that he married Miss Margaret Livingstone, of Dunedin. Commander Ryan served on the Mediterranean station at Malta and Haifa, later transferring to Bermuda and Newfoundland. At the time of his death lie was attached to the Admiralty in London.
