EARLY PRINTING
REV. W. GOLENSO'S WORK COLLECTION ON LOAN An interesting small collection of printing carried out bv the Rev. Wilfliam Colenso at the Pailiia mission station. Bay of Islands, between 1835 and 1840, is being shown in the Auckland Art Gallery. The collection is on loan from the Hawke's Bay Museum and the exhibits are probably specimens retained by Mr. Colenso, who spent his latter years in Hawke's Bay.and died there in 1899. They include the Epistles to the Ephesians and Philippians, in Maori, dated 1835; .James Busby's circular to British residents in the same year, calling upon them to oppose the claims of Baron do Thierry; the declaration of independence of the United Tribes of Xew Zealand, issued very shortly after, and Captain Hobson's proclamation of British sovereignty, dated May 21. 1810. A label attached to the exhibits states that they are the earliest examples of printing oxoeuted in Xew Zealand, but the Rev. William Yate printed a catechism in Maori at Paihia some years' earlier. The collection ;lso includes some water-colour sketches bv Major-Gonoral G. Roblcy and a few documents relating to the early history of Hawke's Bay.
