"EDISON, THE MAN" ♦ An absorbing dramatisation of th(* early disappointments and first tri* umphs of one of America's greatest scientists, the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production "Edison, the Man," will begin a season at St. James' Theatre on Friday. The picture is far removed from the conventional biography. It deals for the most part with Edison's career as a young man, when Ms genius, urged on by the ardour: of youth, brought years of the hardest toil, finally rewarded with fame and success. In spite of his intense mental concentrations and bitter " struggles against reactionary forces, he always maintained the good humour and honesty which later made him'popular with the public. The part of Edison was entrusted to Spencer Tracy, who rewarded the confidence of his studio with one of the finest character _ portrayals of this year. Other prominent players are Rita Johnson, Lynne Overman, Gene Lockhart and Charles Coburn.
